Head to the Edmonton Law Courts, Saturday, April 16, to learn about available legal services and demystify Alberta’s justice system.

During Law Day, Edmonton Law Courts will host fun, educational activities for the whole family. Mock trials will be held throughout the day, highlighting common issues in civil, criminal, constitutional and family law.

Some of this year’s cases include:
• Cinderella v. Lady Tremaine et al. – Cinderella is suing her stepmother and stepsisters for taking her father’s money and making her work for nothing. Should they have to pay her back? You be the jury!
• Luke Skywalker & Princess Leia v. Darth Vader – Luke and Leia are seeking retroactive and ongoing Child Support from Darth Vader. Will he have to pay?
• R. v. Darth Vader – The Crown is prosecuting Darth Vader for using the force for evil. Will the Crown prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt?
• Constitutional Appeal – Can the police read your texts any time they like? And, can your text messages be used against you in a trial? Come find out!

Law Day hosts a number of exhibitors, offering the opportunity to learn more about various legal services available to Albertans, including the Alberta Family Mediation Centre, Alberta Parenting Coordination Group, and the Landlord and Tenant Advisory Board. The event will also include courthouse tours, identity theft presentations, a moot court competition held by high school students and a Canadian citizenship ceremony.

Free legal advice will be available at the “Ask-a-Lawyer” booth. Albertans can also access legal advice, through the dial-a-lawyer program. The program provides an opportunity to receive a 20 minute consultation with a lawyer at no charge.
