Miracles Stories (*names have been changed)
Miracle 1
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Beth and Harold Miller
Dear ShineFM
I am nominating the Miller family. This family of 6 has been staying at the Ronald McDonald house while their 5-year old daughter Miley  - undergoes treatment at the Stollery for leukemia. Originally from Africa, they left everything behind to bring their family to Canada.
They have been at the Ronald McDonald house for the past 7 months and now have been given a December 1st deadline to be out.
Expected employment on their arrival to Canada has fallen through and the father is desperately seeking a good paying job. Because of the lack of income and their medical expenses, the family is struggling financially and need some help this Christmas.

Miracle 2
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Jeremy and Jen
Dear ShineFM
About 5 years ago my brother-in-law was in a horrific car accident. Jeremy and Jen hadn’t been married long, and were just settling down in Rocky Mountain House with a new baby on the way.
Jeremy, a paramedic, was transporting an RCMP officer to the hospital when they were hit head on by a drunk driver.  Jeremy got the worst of it as the driver with 52 bones broken head to toe and his left leg was shattered. That single event changed his and our entire family's lives forever. Jeremy used to be very active, but since the accident is very depressed and is limited in what he can do. Despite his limitations he does have a job, but is having his 9th surgery in the coming weeks and will be off work for up to 6 months.   Jeremy and Jen have two children and are pregnant with a third. She is currently in a high-risk pregnancy situation and will be on bed rest.
Despite these challenges, Jeremy and Jen lean on God and trust Him with everything. They didn’t ask for this to happen in their life, but I would love for them to receive a miracle blessing this Christmas.

Miracle 3
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Mary & Isaac
Dear ShineFM
I am 18 years old and I am nominating my mother Mary. After struggling through a devastating divorce in which she went from being a stay at home mom to a working mother, she met a man who she deserves and who loves us all. We finally could keep our head above water.  Two months after she got married, my mom got sick. She has been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. She cannot work and is constantly in pain. Yet through it all she is still so strong with her love in God. My step dad is an amazing man and has now taken on two jobs to support our family.  We really need a new car. My step dad drives an old car that every time he has to go to work in the snow; I pray he will come home safe. The car has no heat and it scares me to think of him stuck in a ditch freezing.  I would love to be able to give him and my mom this miracle after all that they have done for our family.

Miracle 4
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Nadine and Christopher Michaels
Dear ShineFM
Nadine & Christopher could use a Christmas Miracle. A few years ago, Chris lost his job and they had a flood in their mobile home. The insurance company had a restoration company come out and tear apart their house and cause another flood to occur. The restoration company refused to come back and make the necessary repairs so it was left to Nadine and Chris to do on their own as the insurance company wasn’t able to get anyone else to take on the project. The funds they received from insurance were far less than what the project is costing to complete. They have done what they can but now the floor is starting to lift. The repairs far outweigh their resources.  They haven’t even really celebrated Christmas the past two years due to finances. It would be a Christmas miracle to be able to get their house repairs done and to give them a worry free Christmas.

Miracle 5
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Shelly & Jeff
Dear ShineFM
Shelly and her husband Jeff have had a life altering 6 months. Jeff is deaf and Shelly is hard of hearing. She also has MS and is unable to work. They have a son named Dylan who is 5 years old ( fully hearing) . In May, Jeff fell 9 feet at work and landed on a concrete floor. He was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion that was very severe. He is unable to work and is on WCB. Shelly was collecting AISH due to her MS and inability to work, however when Jeff went on WCB after his accident, they said she was no longer eligible. This means the coverage for her MS medication is no more.
Her monthly prescription costs are over $10K.  So Shelly is no longer taking medication for her MS and just taking pain killers as it’s all they can afford.  She is also playing the dual role of interpreter and wife at all of her husband's medical appointments due to the lack of interpreters available.
They don’t ask for anything, but I know that they really need something to brighten their Christmas as they are going through a lot!

Miracle 6
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Gabrielle and David
Dear ShineFM
In September 2011, Gabrielle was driving home at night with her husband David. A moose jumped into the road and David swerved to try to miss it. They collided and both were taken to the hospital. Gabrielle and their unborn baby were released the next day but David sustained many critical injuries. He was left in a coma for many months. Fast-forward through many surgeries and many facility transfers later, David is now at a wonderful care facility. Gabrielle had a baby girl and they are able to visit David often, however David is unable to walk and has major memory loss. He does not remember anything about Gabrielle and their life together before the accident.  Due to Gabrielle working – they are only able to receive a very, very small amount to cover the $1800 rent of having David in a supported living facility.  They also now have to pay out of pocket for medication and physical therapy sessions that David needs and that insurance will no longer cover.

Miracle 7
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Brad Frost
Dear ShineFM
My friend Brad is an amazing single father to three beautiful children. Unfortunately he has faced constant adversity throughout the past year and things continue to get worse.  It all started when the mother of the three children was putting away the mortgage money instead of paying it and then taking the money and leaving them. The bank foreclosed on their home and they were left with tons of debt and homelessness. They did find a place to live but it was far from school, AND as Brad was trying to rebuild his life, their car died.  Now the entire family has to take the bus everywhere.   Starting their day at 5:30 am, he drops the twins off at the day home, takes the bus in the opposite direction to drop his son at school and then makes his way back downtown to work. He starts picking up the kids at 5:30  but they don’t get home until 8pm each night. Now he can barely afford food due to rising childcare costs and debt. Please help this family. They need a break this Christmas

Miracle 8
Location: Red Deer Area
Nominee: Cathleen Sawyer
Dear Shine FM
I would love for my friend Cathleen to receive the miracle of a food hamper and necessary household items. I chose Cathleen because 6 months ago she was in a terrible hiking accident that left her with a broken neck. She miraculously survived, and is now recovering but receives very little financial help from the government. Due to the injuries, she will be unable to return to work. Cathleen is the kind of person who never puts herself before anyone else, and as she is a new believer, I would love to see her be blessed this Christmas.

Miracle 9
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Linda and George Nelson
Dear ShineFM
Linda and George are a loving, super strong family. George collapsed in January in the family home. Both had been gainfully employed however when George got sick with Kidney failure, he was unable to work and Linda had to cut way back on her hours in order to help him out. George has been getting dialysis at the hospital since the end of January, and though the doctors tell Linda he isn’t going to make it- Linda stands firm saying that her God feels differently. Their finances are severely lacking and asking family for help is not an option. They have been surviving on disability insurance from Georges work, but that has just run out and they don’t have a lot to live on. They do have a vehicle to get to the hospital, but the tires are in very bad shape and they need new ones. They can barely afford food let alone tires. This family needs a blessing in a big way!

Miracle 10
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Rebecca
Dear ShineFM
I would like to nominate my friend Rebecca and her 6-year old son Riley. Rebecca is a beautiful loving soul and her son has an amazing passion for life. They deserve a miracle this Christmas because theirs has been a battle this past year. Many years ago, Rebecca was riding her bike when a drunk driver hit her. Since that day she has suffered debilitating neck issues as well as migraines that render her incapacitated. She has to have injections in her neck monthly just to be able to function.  Rebecca has recently become a single mom after finding out that her husband cheated on her. He drained their bank accounts and left them. Now she has no money, is on the verge of losing their home and has nowhere to go. Her husband will not help with child support and has devastated his son by not showing up for pre-planned visits.  Rebecca is an amazing woman and is doing all she can to hold her little family together, keep their house and to try and get them on track.  She is looking for a job she can do while her son is in school but it is proving difficult because of her medical situation.  She has recently started babysitting on the weekends to try and make ends meet. She powers through, even though activity makes her physically ill (due to her accident). Both Rebecca and Riley are sad in their hearts and need some cheer.

Miracle 11
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Alison & Nathan Taylor
Dear ShineFM
Alison & Nathan just moved to Wainwright from Moncton, NB. They are new believers … Nathan is in the army and got transferred there. They have a  6-year old boy who has autism and a 4-year-old girl. It’s their first Christmas away from their family and they don’t know a whole lot of people. They make very little income and are only scraping by. Surrounding this family with resources for a worry-free Christmas would be amazing- to be able to give to them as much as they’ve given to us by serving our country.

Miracle 12
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Catherine
Dear ShineFM
The person I am nominating is my mother, Catherine.  She has worked hard her whole life and has always put her kids and everyone else's needs ahead of her own, struggling to do so. Now she is in need of help herself. She has been living somewhere the past two years where the people upstairs and the landlord have treated her very poorly and are trying to force her to move and evict her.  Now the landlord has sold the house she has to move by the end of December. Because she only works seasonal, she’s having a hard time coming up with the money to move and to find somewhere that will let her have a cat.  She’s worked so hard to get to where she is now only to be set back again. It would kill me to see everything fall apart again for her.  Even though she is a  strong women, I know she won’t be ok this time around.
There were times where she struggled to make ends meet but she always managed to make a miracle happen at Christmas just to see our faces in the morning. And now it's time for her miracle to happen.

Miracle 13
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Darren and Natalie Thompson
Dear ShineFM
The Thompson family was severely affected by the floods in High River and they live just a few blocks from us. I don’t know them personally but I see that they are in a very desperate situation. They had main floor damage and as of yet have not received any insurance money or disaster relief assistance. Darren quit his job so he could clean and rebuild their house as they cannot afford to hire out to contractors. I see him working alone almost every day slowly replacing walls, floors and windows.  Right now they have been living in a trailer in High River while Darren tries to fix the house alone. The mom Natalie was laid off shortly before the flood and now watches extra children for their income. They are always friendly and smiling despite their circumstances.  They have two preschool aged children. My wish for them is that they would have help in rebuilding their home. They have taken a huge hit and need some help.

Miracle 14
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Natasha
Dear ShineFM
This family is in need of a great miracle so that they can celebrate Christmas as a family.  Natasha is a single mom of two boys, 12 and 14 years. I am a teacher at the boy’s school and they are the sweetest, most polite and thankful kids that you can imagine.  Natasha had contacted us last year about seeing if we could supplement the boy’s lunches with a program we offer. They aren’t able to afford food for school lunches. This family is going through a rough time and is in need of a Christmas Celebration to bring up their spirits and help them though.

Miracle 15
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee: Heidi
Dear ShineFM
Meet Heidi, a dear friend who is a single mom and can’t afford her final year of university. She is an international student (from Congo) and doesn’t have access to funding which leaves her unable to obtain her nursing degree and therefore begin the career that would enable her to support her family.  She is a wonderful person, and very thankful about everything but needs financial assistance in a very big way. I would love to be able to help her out with a Christmas Miracle this year.

Miracle 16
Location: Red Deer
Nominee: Michelle Parks
Dear Shine FM,
Michelle is the wonderful mother to 3 beautiful daughters. Michelle’s Husband tragically passed away a few months ago, leaving the family to struggle financially and emotionally. Since there was no life insurance, they have almost lost their home and are struggling to pay the outstanding funeral expenses.
Michelle’s daughters have been a wonderful blessing to the youth group at our church, and I would love to see them have some time away as a family to help focus on healing and rebuilding their lives. The girls have always talked about going to Banff and a family trip would be such a miracle for them.

Miracle 17
Location: Edmonton area
Nominee:Michelle & Dan Peters
Dear ShineFM
The family I’m nominating is in a very difficult place financially.  A speeding cab inside a local sports complex hit Michelle’s husband Dan when the cab driver suffered some kind of medical emergency. The cab smashed through the back doors of the complex and Dan was able to push one of his 6-year old twins out of the way to avoid being killed. It is a miracle he was able to survive at all. Due to the legal ramifications of this accident and the fact that Dan was severely injured and unable to work while recovering- their main source of income is now gone. They are currently waiting for insurance companies to decide what to do but that could take months to years.  My prayer is that through a Christmas Miracle, Michelle and Dan would see just how real God is and that he loves them very much.

Miracle 18
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee Name: Sandra Kent
Dear ShineFM
Sandra is a single mother who has been raising her 3 kids, 12 and under, on her own.  Recently she has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing Chemotherapy and will be having surgery in the near future as the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. Even though she has gone through a lot including a lot of family problems with no support from the children’s father, she has maintained a strong determined sprit.  Sandra is currently on medical leave from work and it would be wonderful if her Christmas Miracle could be quality fun time with her kids and some relaxing time for herself as she undergoes treatment.

Miracle 19
Location: Red Deer Area
Family:Treena Clark
Dear Shine FM,
My Friend Treena and her family could really benefit from a miracle this Christmas. Treena is recently widowed, leaving her to care for their 2 Children ages 12 and 15.  Treena has gone back to school in order to obtain a better job to support her family; however, her student loan money has been delayed and caused a huge burden, especially this time of year. I would love to help make Christmas extra special for them this year.

Miracle 20
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Suzanne
Dear ShineFM
I met Suzanne and her family through our church. She is a wonderful lady and mom with 7 children (ages 2, 4, 9, 13, 15, 17 and 20). Her 13 year old has special needs and lost his leg in an accident. Her baby girl fell out of a 2nd story window a few months ago and has a tumor on her brain. Our church has been assisting as much as possible, but recently they were evicted from their small home and the church has been unable to help with finding them another place to live. She does have a small vehicle but it is unsafe to drive and not large enough for her to take her entire family to church even!

Miracle 21
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee: Kyla & James
Dear ShineFM
Kyla is battling stage 4-breast cancer and was told in October that she has 2 months to live. Kyla has been undergoing treatment in BC and it looks like the treatment is working.  She has a renewed energy and says her faith is bigger than her fear. Kyla’s husband James is currently not working in order to be with his wife during her treatment in BC. They will be returning to Alberta this month and can really use a miracle. Because the treatment is in BC, large portions of the expenses are out of pocket.  Through it all they continue to have a positive attitude and give to others whenever possible. I would love to be able to give them something to brighten Christmas.

Miracle 22
Location: Calgary Area
Nominee:  Mike
Dear ShineFM
I would love to nominate Mike for a Christmas Miracle- he truly needs one! Mike has a very rare condition and suffers from severe asthma and a shrunken lung. He is currently a janitor at a church and is constantly working or volunteering around the church keeping the building running and warm for the many events that happen.  Mike currently lives in a building above the church and has to work 50-55 hours weekly just to have a roof over his head each month. The hours he works over and above those are his income. He is currently only making $500 to live.  He has applied for extra assistance, but the process is long.  He does have a vehicle but cannot drive it because he can’t afford insurance. Mike is in pain and he is exhausted. He has been needing some hope for a very long time.

Miracle 23
Location: Red Deer Area
Family: Thomas and Kathy Bates
Dear Shine FM
I chose to nominate this family for Christmas Miracles because they have been close to my heart for many years and tragedy has struck them recently.  The Bates family was already struggling finically and trying to make repairs to the doors and windows on their 100 year old home when a tragic accident left their youngest son hospitalized with many critical injuries. Tom and Kathy (who was also hurt in the accident) have struggled to support and be by his side in the hospital, while still caring for their other 3 children who also sustained minor injuries in the accident. My prayers is that they would have some happiness come their way in order to lighten their burden this Christmas, and that they would be able to make the necessary repairs to their home.

Miracle 24
Location: Edmonton Area
Nominee:  Emily
Dear ShineFM
I’ve known my best friend Emily now for over 10 years.  Emily is an epileptic and diabetic and her health has really deteriorated the past few years.  Her husband Joel is also a diabetic. They have suffered terrible things in their life such as the passing of her young daughter to a drunk driver.  Lately, I’ve been concerned for both Emily and her husband Joel.  For the past two years, Joel ends up going to the hospital every three months due to being unable to properly regulate his sugar levels. He also has bad memory loss and swelling due to the diabetes. Because of these health challenges, he has been forced into early retirement. They now have to eat at the food bank every few weeks to stay afloat. Being given a Christmas Miracle would be a real blessing for this couple. The future doesn’t look so bright and this may be a source of strength in their time of need.

Miracle 25
Location: Red Deer Area
Nominee:  Wayne and Cheryl Toms
Dear ShineFM
Wayne and Cheryl have struggled. Cheryl is diagnosed with MS and cervical cancer and they can’t treat the cancer because of the MS. They have a son, aged 12. Wayne just lost his job because the company shut down. His house is to be repossessed in December and any day now, his truck may be as well. With the high cost of the medication for his wife, they cannot afford anything else right now. They need some help… Wayne and Cheryl are in desperate need of a miracle.
