Mat Kearney was born in Eugene, Oregon and spent many Sundays growing up, listening to a variety of music with his dad. After graduating from high school, he attended California State University. He was an English major who loved writing. He picked up a guitar and started writing songs for other people before even thinking of playing it himself. In the summer between his junior and senior year, that Mat Kearney offered to drive a friend across the country and help him move. He ended up staying in Nashville and recording his music. In 2004 Mat Kearney released his first album Bullet through InPop records.

He soon signed with Columbia records and his first album on a major label Nothing Left To Lose was released in 2006. He spent a great deal of time on the road, playing Madison Square Garden as part of VH1's You Oughta Know tour, and opening up for a number of bands including John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, and The Fray. He also appeared on talk shows like Letterman. Plus at least four different cuts from that album were heard television shows like Scrubs, Catch and Release, and Grey's Anatomy. Mat Kearney's latest album is called City of Black & White (2009).

He married his wife Annie, on June 5, 2010. The song "Hey Mama", which will be featured on his upcoming album, Young Love, is about the first time he met his wife.
